Top 10 – Diamond D’s Favorite 45s

April 4th, 2016 will bring a very special edition of NYC’s all-45 throwdown, Mobile Mondays!Celebrating their birthdays, and in the mix with nothing but 45s, will be legendary Hip Hopartists Diamond D and Large Professor.
Originating from the birthplace of Hip Hop, the Boogie Down Bronx, Diamond D‘s introduction to the music world came in 1989 as the production side of his group Ultimate Force. Soon thereafter, he would embark on a solo career, rhyming on the track “Show Business” from A Tribe Called Quest‘s classic sophomore album The Low End Theory. Less than a year later, Diamond would release his own classic with his debut album, Stunts, Blunts, & Hip Hop (1992). Quickly racking up production and remix credits for the cream of the early to mid 90’s Hip-Hop crop, including Brand NubianHouse Of PainOutKastThe Pharcyde, and many, many more, Diamond established a reputation as a go-to producer for a sure-shot beat. Diamond has continued to release his own material and to produce and remix for others, achieving a rare longevity for a Hip Hop artist. As evidenced by the name of the super group he claims membership in, D.I.T.C. (Diggin In The Crates), Diamond has always been a representative for vinyl culture. Be sure to check out Diamond’s latest release, the instrumental compilation Dat’s That Shit! An Exclusive Collection Of Rare Instrumentals From The DAT Vault.
In preparation of this Mobile Mondays! birthday celebration, we caught up with Diamond and he gave us a breakdown of 10 of his favorite 45s!

Great news everyone, Omar-S has revealed details of his next album, The Best!

News of the record first broke back in December, when Omar-S, real name Alex Omar Smith, contributed a three-hour mix for RA's 500th podcast. The LP will be Smith's fifth full-length release, and arrives three years after his most recent album, 2013's Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself. Like almost all of the Detroit artist's catalogue so far, The Best lands on Smith's own FXHE Records. Astral Plane Recordings announces EP from Chants

The new label's second release lands at the end of April.

Astral Plane Recordings's next EP will come out on April 29th.

The label arm of the well-respected club music blog launched back in January with an RA Recommended EP from little-known UK producer SHALT. For the second release, the imprint has dug up another up-and-comer, Chants, who hails from Wisconsin. (He offered up a track for the Heterotopia compilation back in 2014.) Astral Plane says that The Zookeeper "continues our mission to push club music into noisier and more abstract territory," and sees Chants "turn his focus towards texture and rhythm," inspired by David Mitchell's novel Ghostwritten.

Cristian Vogel next up on The Tapeworm cassette label

The legendary producer has prepared a 90-minute 'Mist Tape, out later this March.

Cristian Vogel will release 'Mist Tape via The Tapeworm later this March.

Vogel describes his project for the experimental tape label, which has also issued cassette works from Fennesz, Pye Corner Audio and Stephen O'Malley, as such: "I found some talking books out on the street—someone was throwing them away.

Juan Atkins reveals Metroplex reissue campaign

Juan Atkins reveals Metroplex reissue campaign

Some of Atkins' early Model 500 records, along with a rare 1996 EP from Robert Hood's The Vision alias, are set to be repressed.

Detroit innovator Juan Atkins is giving new life to material issued on his influential Metroplex label, starting with some of his work as Model 500.

Records from Model 500 formed the bulk of Metroplex's early output, back in the mid to late-'80s, and nowadays they're often hard to find. On Facebook, Atkins has called this the "first back catalogue repress," and fresh releases—on vinyl as well as digital and CD—of Night Drive, Sound Of Stereo / Off To Battle and The Chase are on the way.

The Untold Story of Joey Beltram, the Techno Titan Behind the 90s' Most Iconic Rave Anthems

For those who were indulging in the early-90s dance music underground, it hit with like a bolt of lab–built lightning— all Tesla-coil pulses, spiraling smoke trails, and Frankenstein kicks, soaked in a catalytic vat of synthetic compounds. The song was "Energy Flash," and back in the heady days of 1990 it was a major milestone in the rise of rave culture, establishing a benchmark for a new form of hard-edged techno and twisting heads everywhere from the outer boroughs of New York City to the love-parading street of Berlin and beyond. The tough, sinewy techno cut was the brainchild of Queens native Joey Beltram, rocketing the 19-year-old to clubland glory and carving out his place in rave history.
